MSCCN's Colorado Springs MilSpouse Job Club Kick-Off

Register to join MSCCN's Colorado Springs MilSpouse Job Club on January 19, 2011 from 9-11AM to discuss "Organizing Your Job Search".

The MilSpouse Job Club will offer a training platform where military spouses, veteran spouses, veterans, and veteran caretakers can learn to network, develop their job search strategies, and receive support from other military-affiliated job seekers.
Participating military spouses will be able to share their experiences, seek and offer advice from other participants, and give and receive encouragement.  The club will:
  • Offer a networking opportunity.  Spouses can share contacts and job leads.
  • Educate members on job search strategies.  Focus weekly on different job search topics including Organization, Job Fairs, Networking, Marketing Yourself, and Comparing Offers.
  • Develop professional groups where members can collaborate and attend professional networking meetings together to avoid having to go alone.
  • Help members with career development by introducing educational opportunities, career development, work-from-home opportunities, and informational interviews.
  • Introduce guest speakers to offer advice and expertise on job search, interviewing, and resume/career development.
  • Work with local companies and hiring managers to give job seekers tips and to draw from the group for hiring.
  • Job search assistance, interactive activities, corporate networking, volunteer-to-career programs, internships, and other programs offered through the Airman and Family Supports Centers and the MSCCN.
Everyone says you have to treat searching for a job like it is your job and most people do.  They sit at their desk working long hours developing resumes and applying for positions.  After weeks and months of effort there is often very little payoff; you are still looking for work, and you’re starting to feel like something is wrong with you.
So instead of “working” to find a job, develop a plan.  Our goal is to share suggestions to change your approach to your job search.  We will discuss how to develop a plan, create a schedule, and set up some organization to improve your results.
Join us as we discuss how to jump start your job search and move forward!  Bring your resume and your questions, and come prepared to make headway in your job search or career advancement plan.

Veterans Facing High Unemployment

A new Washington Post article highlights the bleak employment prospects faced by veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Due to the weak economy and the stigma of service-related mental disabilities, veterans have a higher unemployment rate than their civilian peers.

Many of these young veterans are not married, but for those that are, imagine the difference it would make if the military spouse had a good job as the family transitioned from military to civilian life.

Is your military family prepared to leave the service?  If you are a military spouse, do you have the skills necessary to land a job in today's economy?  MSCCN offers various training opportunities to help military spouses find not just a job—but a career.
